What Is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a generic term for a group of minerals known for their strength, flame and heat resistance, and seemingly indestructible qualities.

Once considered a "miracle mineral" asbestos was used for many years in building construction. It can be found in many forms and places. Asbestos was used in acoustic ceiling, heater ducting, insulation, floor tiles, sheet flooring, flooring mastic, exhaust flues, exterior siding, roofing materials, roof mastic and plaster walls and other building materials.

Because of its indestructible qualities, asbestos is harmful to the human body. The body cannot digest, break down, or change asbestos; it can only attempt to encapsulate it with scar tissue.

Several types of asbestos were banned by the EPA in the mid-70's due to concern over the health effects (especially cancer) associated with exposure to such materials.

When planning demolition, renovation or remodeling projects, owners and contractors must be concerned with risking exposure to asbestos dust.

Can I Remove Asbestos Myself?

EPA recommends that when dealing with materials containing asbestos, whether it is to repair or remove, you hire an asbestos professional to do the work for you. Improper handling of asbestos material can create more of a hazard than if it is left undisturbed.

Lead Paint

Many homes and schools built before 1978 will have some lead-based paint on the interiors and/or exteriors. It can also be found on playground equipment, boats, and bridges. Exposure to lead can cause brain damage, especially in children and pregnant women.

The most common cause of exposure is from the dust generated when you sand lead-based paint or when the paint chips or peels with age.

Since lead paint is most deteriorated on the exterior of houses, the chips often find their way into window sills and the soil surrounding the building.

The dust or chips are picked up easily by touch of a hand or any object, especially those that are wet. Thus a toy wetted by a child's mouth is capable of picking up contaminated dust, which is then ingested when the child puts the toy back in his or her mouth.

Paint chips are the most visible sign of lead paint problems.

If paint is chipping, you should contact Alternative Technologies Inc. who is trained in lead-based paint removal and clean up. Do not hire an amateur or do-it-yourself handyman to remove lead-based paint
